National Defense and Hate Crimes together in one bill

President Obama to sign National Defense Authorization Act into law tomorrow

by Pendra Lee Snyder CCN-USA

WASHINGTON DC-President Obama is expected to sign FY 2010 National Defense Authorization Act into Law tomorrow (Wednesday, October 28th) at 2:30 PM. He will deliver brief remarks and will be joined by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Members of Congress, and others.

The final bill received stiff, yet not enough, resistance from some republicans during the final House vote on Oct 22. That's because liberals managed to successfully attach "Hate Crimes" provisions onto the annual defense authorization. As a result, tomorrow after the signing, the President is expected host a reception to commemorate the enactment of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. He will deliver brief remarks at 6:05 PM, and will be joined by Attorney General Eric Holder, civil rights community leaders and others.

On Oct. 8 Oct 8, differences between the Senate and House versions of the bill were worked out, paving by roll call vote. The totals were 281 Ayes, 146 Nays, 6 Present/Not. The "nays" by some OHIO Republicans include: Jean Schmidt, Jim Jordan and John Boehner. The "ayes" include Republicans Mike Turner and Steve Austria.

Finally, on Oct. 22, after passing a conference committee clearing the way for a vote, both Ohio Senators, George Voinovich (R) and Sherrod Brown (D) voted for the packaged bill.
